Barrier
Billions of people lack reliable access to clean water, especially in remote or resource-scarce regions. Large-scale infrastructure is slow and costly, demanding decentralized, renewable, and rapidly deployable alternatives.
Breakthrough
Groundbreaking solutions extract fresh water from the atmosphere using low-cost, renewable energy. These systems deliver clean, off-grid water access—without relying on pipes, wells, or conventional supply chains.
About the Prize
The $1.75M XPRIZE Water Abundance was launched to combat global water scarcity by reimagining how we produce water, especially in areas where infrastructure is limited or nonexistent. Instead of drilling wells or laying pipe, the competition sought energy-efficient technologies that could harvest clean water straight from the atmosphere.
Teams were challenged to extract at least 2,000 liters of water per day from the air using 100% renewable energy and at a cost of less than two cents per liter. These benchmarks ensured that solutions would be not only technically viable but also scalable, affordable, and environmentally sustainable.
The Grand Prize went to Team Skysource / Skywater Alliance for their WEDEW system—Wood-to-Energy Deployed Water. The device combines atmospheric water generation with biomass gasification to power the process entirely with renewable energy. Its modular, self-contained design allows it to be deployed anywhere, providing safe drinking water to off-grid and climate-vulnerable communities.
Following the prize, WEDEW partnered with the UN World Food Programme to serve communities in Uganda, Liberia, and India. The innovation opens new pathways for sustainable, distributed water access and delivers dignity, resilience, and opportunity to those most affected by scarcity.
Prize Schedule
Launched in 2016 and concluded in 2018, the XPRIZE Water Abundance challenged teams to harvest water from air using only renewable energy. After rigorous final testing in California, Skysource/Skywater Alliance won the Grand Prize with their WEDEW system.
