A $7 MILLION GLOBAL COMPETITION TO

TRANSFORM THE LIVES OF ADULT LEARNERS.

The Barbara Bush Foundation Adult Literacy XPRIZE presented by Dollar General Literacy Foundation is a global competition challenging teams to develop mobile applications for existing smart devices that result in the greatest increase in literacy skills among participating adult learners in just 12 months. The solutions will overcome key barriers to literacy learning by improving access, while increasing retention, and scaling to meet demand. Our vision is to empower the nearly 1 in 6 adults in the U.S. who lack basic literacy skills to improve their lives and realize their dreams.

Teams will compete in a multi-stage competition that tests for:

  • Ability to measurably increase the literacy level of low-literate adults within 12 months.
  • Creation of a design that is easy and accessible for use on a mobile phone so that learners can access it and operate it from anywhere, anytime.
  • Software curriculum that is engaging, relevant and attuned to the needs and interests of the adult learner.

On a hot summer day in 1978, as her husband mulled his first presidential run, Barbara Bush headed to Houston’s leafy Memorial Park for a jog while she thought about what issues she’d like to focus on should she become first lady.

I never had the opportunity to meet the former first lady and the matriarch of one of America’s political dynasties. But over the past few years, I have had the honor to work in small ways on initiatives with one of her many legacies—the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy.

During her time at the White House, Bush established herself as champion of literacy, encouraging reading and writing among Americans. In 1989, she founded the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy.
